Have you completely cut out refined sugar?

I can’t see me ever cutting out refined sugar completely, because I like my cake and sometimes some chocolate. But I need to reduce it, like I have done before.
With the difficulties I have had this year and especially how I felt these last few months, I have been eating a lot of the wrong thing. No surprise is it as I am sure you reading this now, will acknowledge how easy it can be to have something of the wrong thing that we find comforting.
Last month, at times I ate really high sugar content. This was surprising I managed that, without feeling sick, because when I changed the way I ate a few years ago for the better, meant my tastebuds changed and I could no longer tolerate sweet food. Yet, just last month I ate two bags of sugar-coated sweets, without grimacing. I did not eat these two bags in one go, but I did eat them the same day. Not like me at all. But thankfully, I have not gone out to buy another bag of those sweets and I have no intention.

Refined sugar we all know is not essential for our health. We also know it’s not good for our health:

  • Obesity
  • Cavities in teeth
  • Type 2 diabetes

These are just a few. But I have also been reading how it can affect out mental health. It apparently does not help us if we have depresdion and anxiety. Some things I have read for this, a lot of them I have experienced.

I admire those that can really cut out the refined sugar, because sugar appears in food you would not think of, like white bread for example. But there are other foods too, which I won’t list, because it is too many to list and if you want to read up on it further, you only have to Google it.

As I have said, I can’t see me cutting it out completely. But, I can reduce it.

Out of curiosity, have any of my readers cut out refined sugar completely from their diet?

If so, maybe you have suggestions, or tips for me and other readers, should we decide to cut it out.
But even if not cutting out, reducing is better than nothing.

  1. A couple of years ago I stopped putting sugar in my tea by switching to stevia. I didn’t really like the taste of stevia, so I was able to cut that out pretty quickly. My tea preference still remains sugar-free.

    1. I don’t have sugar in my tea. I gave that up at a very young age. So no sugar for me, in any hot drinks.
      I know Stevia is sweeter than sugar,so you wouldn’t nerd as much.

  2. I went on keto for 6 weeks and it really helped but was restrictive. I now do not have any processed foods or sugars and if you can keep this up for a week you will no longer like the taste of sugar but will crave more salt. And yes – I was a complete sweet tooth! X

    1. Thank you for sharing your experiences. Yes, I can understand your tastebuds changing, as mine did when I first cut back on sugar and salt alone.
      I certainly don’t want to crave salt, as years ago I cut this down and came off blood pressure tablets.
      But yes, after reducing salt and going onto the same with sugar, I did feel good health wise. 🙂
      I certainly need to reset my sugar one though.
      It fascinates me for those that can completely cut out refined sugar.

  3. I imagine it’s very hard to cut out completely as it’s ‘hidden’ in so many foods which I find annoying.
    If I’m treating myself to a cake or chocolate then I KNOW there’s sugar & it’s an occasional treat to be balanced out with good food generally, but I get cross that manufacturers add sugar into things that don’t need them …

    1. I totally agree with you there. It is certain hard if you want to cut it out, because if it being hidden in not the obviius food. I realised that mysrlf, when I started reading the labels and discovered a ready meal, a chinese one; sweet and sour was high in sugar.
      Best to eat freshly cooked. But the odd occasions, there is nothing like having the odd ready made meal. I just make sure it’s low as it can be.

  4. I think reducing and working on a better balance, listening to your body in terms of how sugar makes you feel, is a good idea. I haven’t reduced sugar but for years I’ve bought no added sugar/no cal/low cal versions of lots of things like fizzy drinks, yoghurts, jelly etc. I think I prefer the taste too. But I still have plenty of chocolate and Haribo. I can’t and won’t cut out refined sugar. But I don’t overdo it either. xx

    1. I think for me it’s best balancing it out too. You only live once. If I cut it out completely, I know I could risk binging on the bad stuff. But I certainly do have to tone down my sweets I have been having, to how I would normally have them. Instead, when I feel the need, make sure I have a better alternative to hand. Like I used to.

      I know I can feel hyper at times with some sweets. But surprisingly I don’t crash. I can feel myself coming down. But it’s a relaxed way normally. But with how I have felt at my dark moments, I do wonder if my excess has played a part in my mental health. In particular, those times on waking up with my heart pounding. Xx

  5. I was given a bag of a Halloween candy crepes and yes, ate them all. Now it’s back to being sane again. I love sweets and have to watch it!😩

  6. I couldn’t cut out sugar completely, but since I had chemo I no longer have a real desire for it. I prefer savoury now. But I do have the occasional bit ofchocolate

    1. I think it’s really hard to cut it out. But for those that can do it, I admire. Since I went dairy free, I find my chocolate is less and controlled. I am satisfied with a few pieces out of a bar. Last me longer. But I have been naughty with the sugar coated jelly sweets and other jelly sweets these last few months, as well as a frw more cakes than I would normally. So I need to reign it in.

      1. I don’t think I could ever go completely sygar free Liz but I certainly don’t like much of it now

  7. Excellent post Liz, cutting sugar is not always easy as it is in foods without knowing, artificial sweetners are more unhealthy than taking sugar. Sugar also feeds cancer as it creates a mucous in the body. Like you when I am unable to cook at home having to buy what is available always results in junk food. Using cinnamon or honey are better alternatives.

    1. Yes, I read that too regarding sugar and cancer, which that was a new one for me.
      When I have the odd ready meal, I always make sure it’s the lowest I can get of something I fancy. But things like the Chinese sweet and sour one I have not had since the discovery of its sugar content.

  8. I tried cutting out sugar for 3 weeks once, but there was still sugar in sauces and salad dressings. There seems to be sugar in everything! When I bake, I use maple syrup or honey, but I’m starting to realize that my sugar consumption hasn’t really decreased. Right now I’m back to eating tons of refined sweets and would like to quit. I know it’s not good for me, and yet I’m so addicted to sugar.

    If I bake, my desserts are usually Keto, vegan, sugar free or gluten free. At least I know what’s in the stuff I cook and bake from scratch.

    1. Yes, cooking from scratch certainly helps you to know what’s in your food.
      I started introducing some sauces after a couple of years not having any. I need to not buy anymore once gone, cos sugar content in sauces and other dressings is just like sprinkling on sugar.

  9. My partner and I have recently made a diet change from mostly vegetarian to mostly vegan. And sugar, of course, was on our list as big no-no’s, esp for him who used to put milk and sugar in his coffee. I think you’re on the right track as far as trying to move towards a more balanced approach. I don’t like sugary drinks like soda, so I think that helps, too. Also, cooking at home allows you to have more control over what you are eating. Good luck!

      Dilute pop is what I occasionally drink and more than fizzy poo, but rarer the odd fizzy pop. It was something I seemed to naturally drop, before I made some changes.
      Fizzy drinks seem to come more near Christmas.
      Sugar in tea and coffee was when I was a very young child. I decided to stop taking it as a child and never had it in since.
      Reducing it and keeping it low is certainly easier for me. Avoiding the high stuff, or just at very rare moments.

      After these past few months where it did go off track, I am now starting to get it in check.

    1. Thank you for your comment. Refined sugar is practically in everything, which makes it hard. Some being hidden where you least expect it, unless of course you paying close attention to labels.
      But cutting down is certainly better than nothing.
