Staycation – Day 5 of 6

Day 5 of 6 Staycation is for 22nd May.

Just a simple day and a slight change of plan. But I did not mind, as it was a good enjoyable day anyway.

Woke up at 7am, so got up, got washed and dressed. Had breakfast, which I decided I am in the mood of a double breakfast of cereals. So it was a bowl of rice crispies, followed by weetabix. But this came in handy, as you will see.

I checked in at work to let them know all is well, then responded to another email that I have been waiting a reply from. I wonder how long now they will keep me waiting again.

I then checked my blog and read others. By the time I done all this and washed my pots, my neighbour came as planned. We chatted from then at 10am, right into the early afternoon. So gone past my lunch. But I wasn’t hungry. A couple of teas served during that time. Now you see why my breakfast came handy in the end? But we had a good time chatting and I think the time went quick. I’m a little tired for it. But I feel good all the same.

After my neighbour went, I checked on my blog and read a few others, then I decided for dinner, I’d have an omelette, after I was fancying this, or scrambled egg from our discussion on food.
Now I have had omelettes before, but it is first time doing my own. Here it is. I put some of dairy-free cheese on top, grated, after taking photo. I enjoyed with two slices of bread.

My omelette on plate

I then watched my dvd I have watched before, ‘Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.’
During watching my film, I started to smell strong smoke. My eyes were stinging a little too. Looking outside, while closing my window I had open, I could see a lot of smoke. I thought it was coming from opposite side of the road, but with the thickness of the smoke and trees in front of my property that made viewing to across the street difficult, so it was hard to tell. Not long after I closed my window, I could see my neighbour had warned me about smoke too and to close my window, in a text. Then I seen a fire engine go by. Whether it was for this fire, wherever the smoke was coming from, or going elsewhere, I don’t know. But in the end, like my neighbour who is also asthmatic and said he had to use his inhaler, I ended up having to use my inhaler as well.
I think it was about an hour this smoke went on for, before it stopped and when I thought it had finished, another thick smoke appeared during that time.
Although a hot day today, there was a breeze that picked up earlier and that breeze still there, probably brought the smoke this way, bringing it from a different direction to where I thought it originally was. But it was hard to tell.

After I watched my film, I put a tai chi dvd on again and did a bit of that, followed by some gentle stretches, before I went to bed.

Staycation – Day 1 of 6

So before I get to day 1 of my Staycation post, I thought I’d update you regarding my day trip I wondered about.
I looked up on their website to see whether I should be contacting the coach company, or not and see what was happening with regards to day trip this Sunday, to Whitby.
I emailed, because this coach company doesn’t have any immediate contact details, other than my address. Where as another I use, does, should later things don’t change and another trip is affected.
They replied back and said, as I expected, that they could see this trip to Whitby being cancelled, so they would refund me if so. I thanked them for their reply.

Now onto my Staycation post.

So this Staycation – Day 1 post, is for 18th May.

It was my birthday and my original plan was to travel to Sherwood Forest and have my day there, out in the woods and lunch in the visitor centre. I knew it would  possibly be a mix of feelings, so that’s why I chose to be out there. But now, due to how things have changed because of the virus, I won’t be there.

So what is my plan now in place of this?

Well… I stuck with the theme, woods.

Bloggers that have been following for some time will know the garden outside my flat has trees and so immediately looking out, the first thing I see is trees, followed by the wild birds that visit the garden. So a good start and the view I fell fall, when I first seen this flat I currently live in.

My window clear of condensation than its ever been
The view taken on November 2018

I laid a blanket on the floor near this window from when I got up at 7am, ready for when I sit there this morning. I then had my breakfast, which was just cereals and a mug of tea, before checking into work to let them know all is fine. (They are checking on all us cleaners to see we are fine, from when we all had to stop working due to virus. Although I am now working, I still have to check in.)
I then opened my birthday cards, while sat near my window. These are the ones that have arrived before my birthday. I certainly smiled when opening these cards.
I texted and emailed those that sent these cards and I just sat in quite until my neighbour came, who I regularly have a mug of tea with now.

Some birthday cards

My neighbour brought round a card and a present, from him and his wife. My present was a selection of shower gels, by Korres. A brand his wife uses.
I have not heard of this brand before. Have you?

A selection of small shower gels. Stil in packet.

There is:

  • Basil Lemon Shower Gel
  • Guava Shower Gel
  • Ginger Lime Shower Gel
  • Bergamot Pear Shower Gel

I am looking forward to trying these.

Another birthday card came through the door this morning, so I texted to let her know I received that and thanked her, as it wasn’t long prior she’d texted me.

I had a picnic at lunch time on my blanket near the window, so it was sandwiches (one being tuna, the other was salmon and haddock paste), baby tomatoes, crisps, a lemon cake slice (dairy-free) to eat and cherry cola to drink. My cola I did not have on the floor, as I did not want to risk me knocking it over.

Sandwiches, crisps, tomatoes and cake.

In the afternoon, sitting back on my sofa, I watched a dvd I had not seen before called, ‘A Walk In The Woods.’ The film starred Robert Redford, Nick Nolte and Emma Thompson.

Rest of my evening, I chose to re-watch my Bridget Jones dvd’s, back to back.

I also had a lavender candle lit.

I had my usual variety of sandwiches for dinner, as I did at lunch, with baby tomatoes and another cake.
Mugs of tea, through to the evening.

Today, may not have been my original plan due to the virus and and what was possibly going to be a mixture of emotions.
But today turned out to be a good and enjoyable day, in the end.

Does anyone lose track with their age and if so, find it’s worse when they get older? I think when my work colleagues asked my age a few months first working there, that I gave my right age, but fast forward to the following year, which was last year I am thinking of, I don’t know if I may have gave my age wrong. I don’t know. Can’t remember. But if I gave my right age then, then come towards end of last year, through to this year, I have been thinking to myself my age and made it wrong. So thankfully no one asked during that point, because I have been doing my mum’s trick, making myself a year older. Lol
I have even made a note on my phone and in my birthday book, for how old I am this year.

Crafts - acrylic painting
A few small acrylic paintings

The above was from last weekend when I said I would be doing some acrylic painting in last week’s It’s the weekend post. This was all I done. It didn’t lead to further inspiration. But if I ever plan to paint a small leafless tree on a rock, I am going to need more practice with that one.

Today, I plan to make more shortbread biscuits this morning. I shall roll it out and use a round circle pastry cutter again than doing it my usual way. I found my shortbread biscuits was much better this way. So this way I plan to do from now on.

I shall listen to some of my neighbours cd’s, this morning.

After lunch, I will watch a dvd of mine, ‘The Contract.’
Then I plan to watch a couple of my neighbours dvd’s, which the first one will be ‘UFO’ and it will last me a fair bit, as it has several dvd’s inside.
‘UFO’ is A Gerry Anderson Production and it contains volumes 1 to 4 inside.
Looking on the back its a 1970’s live action sci-fi thriller. Some of the people that star in this are, Ed Bishop, George Sewell, Michael Bullington and Peter Gordeno. Does ‘UFO’ seem familar to you?
It’s before my time, but whether I have seen any clips of this on tv, if it ever came on later, in the 80’s. I don’t know. Time will tell, when I start playing this.

Sunday, I most definitely be watching dvd’s today. Startingwwith the one I started yesterday, if I am still interested in it.

I will probably mix my day with a couple of cd’s too. Again, the ones from my neighbour.
I have more of Apocalyptica to listen to. So looking forward to that and others I have never head of before. So I don’t know what to expect.

What’s your weekend?

Chit-chat April

Just some dvd’s watched:

  • The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
  • Bridget Jones Diary
  • Bridget Jones The Edge of Reason
  • Juno
  • Happy Feet
  • After Earth
  • The Lucky One
  • The English Patient
  • Stuart Little
  • Stuart Little 2

And an old tv series I watched on dvd, lent to me, “Land of the Giants.”

I went to Ted Talk, to read transcript of Growth Mindset, by Carol Dweck, as recommended by a blogger in a comment in one of my earlier posts, on my last night of internet data allowance, with new starting the next day. I read the transcript with the video not being accessible to me. But even if it had been, I would not have had enough allowance to watch, with having to stay at home, unless it was essential, due to the lockdown because of the Coronavirus and so not using wifi at times. I found the talk interesting. I am glad there was a written transcript available.

When this post airs, I will have already finished my challenge. So how did I get on?
Out of those 40 days, 6 days of those, I did eat something on my banned list. But I am not going to knock myself for that and I didn’t at the time either, because it shown me my willpower had improved. When I did eat a sweet item, I only had a portion. I did not binge, or eat daily a sweet item, as much as I wanted to. So I am not like how I was before I started this challenge and this shows me I can treat myself to a sweet without binging. So I seem to be like how I used to be now, before I went off the tracks.

The way I shop as changed

Before the Coronavirus had started, I used to shop for groceries every couple of days, for things I needed, to top up what I used. So it was always a light shop. But when we had to stay in and only be allowed out for essentials and keeping it less as possible going for them, I changed my shop to twice a week. I plan to continue to do this from now on, when one day the world resumes and not in lockdown.

As you know already, whenever it came to buying things, I was going to do it mostly in cash this year, due to an issue I noticed last year when it came to paying by debit card.
Before the Coronavirus virus started, I tried a couple of places using my debit card, so I now have places where I can trust using and, where I don’t, which is just one place and the one that will have been the cause of last year. That one will only ever be by cash from now on. It’s nice to know who I can trust, because I will be making changes with the way I pay from this month, when it comes to groceries.
For those new and wondering what the issue was, I’m not going to explain again, as I don’t want to make this post long by doing so. It’s in an older post somewhere I written earlier this year. Plus, it’s not something I want to chat about again and lose focus with the rest of my post.

My mum is still not well to look after herself at home, mentally, as I mentioned in this post, (TW) I should have been dead before I was born.
Her new social worker got in touch with me via email to discuss discharge, which when time comes it will be a nursing home facility. So she wanted to make sure that even though I am not getting involved directly with my mum, to make sure if I wanted to have a say in her care, with it being such a big thing and to share any possible wishes mum may have had, should there been a time she would not be living at home.
Although I knew the nursing home option could happen, it’s not personally what I would have hoped for. I always wanted my mum to live as independently as possible, with support when required. But with mum how she is mentally, then this is what to be expected. I am upset that this is the route, its now become and although I have been told that sometimes there is a chance during the first 6 weeks that a person can be well enough to go back home, I doubt this will happen.
A Court of Protection will be in place for her fiances and an advocate for independent support.

I can become involved as little, or as much as I want, putting my own health and wellbeing first, as Social Worker put it, via our email discussion.
Normally, this kind of discussion would be face to face, but with the Coronavirus, means it has to be done by email. Hopefully, I will get to meet her at some point, when social distancing allows.

As this post airs, my mum could already be at the nursing home. The nursing home is not in the area preferred and unfortunately, it was in an area my mum avoids. So my concern was what this would, or could cause and why my mum avoids this area, which meant it also bought my past up, as the two are connected. I reassured my mum’s social worker that it didn’t triggered anything for me. But there would be an issue if a particular person by chance worked at this nursing home, as I wouldn’t be in the same room as him and I wouldn’t want him near my mum. My mum wouldn’t want him near her either. Or if she happened to be out and about with staff and passed this person in the area, it may start something with mum.
My mum thankfully though, has been compliant, when she was told about the nursing home.

Mum has had to come to an area not chosen, due to suitable homes in preferred areas could not take any patients on currently, due to being short staffed, because of the Coronavirus.

Looking at the website, I can see it will cater for my mum. It feels homely and they have a resident dog, which my mum will enjoy, as she looked forward to PAT dog coming to the ward. So I hope this place will open her up a little, or a lot, because currently, she doesn’t engage with other residents or staff well, on the ward. This is what I expected in the 5 minutes I last had with her back in November.

Although it’s not chosen area. I have said to my mum’s social worker that if it turns out in the end when they review my mum later after so many weeks, that nursing home is still the only option for my mum, that should she express that she likes it there and wants to stay, then I won’t be against her staying there. I will be happy, if she is.

Planning my staycation for May

After last nights discussion at work regarding my annual leave at work, as they wanted to check I was still planning on having these with me being entitled to them, so they could look at getting cover, it looks like life as it is is currently, is not likely to change soon. So if that’s the case and travel is still restricted by then, some things I had planned, for my week off in May, may not be happening. Like my planned travel to Sherwood Forest on my birthday and my day trip to Whitby. So I am planning my Staycation now, just in case I need alternative ideas for then.

Last time I planned my own holiday was when I created my own wellness retreat back in 2017. Travel wasn’t restricted then, so I did have a day out, or two in that time, but most being in the comfort of my own home.
I won’t link to those posts, as they are password protected now and I won’t be accepting anymore requests for access to these, or other password protected posts now, as all posts have written, have been public anyway for some months. But for those that do have the password to access any password protected post, just so you know, it still works, so you can still access them. I don’t plan on password protecting any future posts I write. But ones that are protected, will remain protected.
Readers who have been reading those posts when they were originally aired back in 2017, before they went private last year, will remember that was when that particular weekend ended in sadness, as that was when I discovered my cousin and her husband were killed in a road traffic accident, where they lived.

So back to planning my possible staycation for May. This time, travel restricted, means things are going to be different this time round. But it can still be fun.

I looked for new ideas via the WordPress reader and Google, using ‘staycation ideas,’ for my search. When using Google, I narrowed the search down to the last month. Through searching, I came up with some ideas that I would never have thought of. So with my own ideas and new ones, here is a list I written of some staycation ideas:

  • Have a themed day, like an Italian day, or some other country. You can eat Italian food, read books about Italy for example. This was a new idea for me.
  • Have a zoo day, or just an afternoon of it. There are some zoos around the world that have live cameras, so you may see them in action. Even being fed. Read books on particular animals, or read more online about them. When it comes to your lunch. What do you do normally when at a zoo? If like me, it’s a packed lunch, then make your packed lunch the night before like you normally would, (well I do anyway) and then you have no preparation making it on the day.
  • Have a wildlife day/nature day. Again, this can be a mixture of dvd’s, books, online reading, or watching. Or observing nature in your own doorstep, if you have a garden.
  • Have a spa day. Pamper your body and relax your mind, ranging from facials to pedicures. Nice smelly body lotion after a shower, or a soak in the bath. Scented candles, relaxing sounds. Paint your nails. Something that I did part if in my weekend retreat back in 2017.
  • Virtual travel. There are some free videos online, where you can do a virtual travel. This was something new that I learnt.
  • Picnic in your own back garden.
  • Picnic on your living room floor.
  • Dvd night. Watch a film, or a show. Don’t forget your popcorn, if you want that too.
  • Virtual game night.
  • Read a good book, or more.
  • Gardening.
  • Cooking/baking.
  • Getting crafty.
  • Camping in your back garden, or on the living room floor.
  • Listen to different music that you wouldn’t normally listen to. Something that I have done more of these last few months.

I haven’t decided on what I am doing for all my days, during the week off work in May. But I have planned a few.

Friday Fun – waiting

Aroused Friday Fun is theme is, ‘waiting.’ To see how to join in and to read Aroused post on ‘waiting,’ please  click on the above link.

My legs showing in photo while gaving them up on the settee, looking outside at the sunny weather

Waiting…

  • to travel to places afar.
  • To walk on parks and nature reserves I dare not walk on now, for fear there be too many people.
  • To not have the anxiety before I go out to walk and during my walk.
  • To feel no anxiety at all, while at work, like I normally would.
  • To see my work colleagues again and hopefully friends.
  • To have a cuppa and chat with my neighbours, at mine.
  • To get groceries without worrying whether I get food.
  • To not worry about money, because of not working in one job.
  • To not worry more than normal about friends, due to Coronavirus going around.
  • While waiting to know when I can travel afar, I sit and feel the sun coming in, through my window.

It’s the weekend

Before I start to mention about this weekend, I thought I would mention how I was so right about my morning job, when it came to my wages. I have only been paid what I worked and nothing for when I had to stand down in that job.
I will get by this month. But if from now until next month when I get paid and I am in the same situation and that employer has not got the Government money that was promised, then I will have nothing from that one.

My evening one was not quite a week standing down, before I was asked in an email if I would like to work. I am still doing this. But had I had to stand down and still be in that situation, I know I would still get my full wages off them.

I have also started wearing my Ear Gear again, since Monday, to make my hearing aids more noticable. I am currently wearing my royal blue ones.

Now onto my weekend post.

Due to me working in my evening one. Still at my earlier time, while the situation is what it is for the UK, meant my weekend started Thursday night after work, with our bank holidays being Friday and this coming Monday.

So Thursday night, after work I just watched dvd’s while having my tea. I watched Irwin Allen’s The Time Tunnel. The Complete Series. I started this earlier in the week and getting to near the end of them now.

Friday morning after breakfast, I chose to bake some puff pastry jam pockets, using my ready made puff pastry. Once baked, I set them aside to cool and put them in a container after, not to try until tomorrow.

Puff pastry jam pockets
Puff pastry jam pockets

I then vacuumed my flat, before choosing to sit on the floor for an hour nearer to my window, to feel closer to nature.
Later, I played some cd’s in the afternoon and relaxed on the settee. I also joined in with Fibbing Friday.
Early evening, you’ve guessed it, dvd’s.

Today, would have been Southwell for the day originally. But with how the situation is, due to Coronavirus, that won’t be happening now. I’ve lost no money by it, as I would have been on public transport for this. So when we are back to some kind of norm, I will be there, when I can go.
So to break away from vegging on settee and just watching dvd’s all day, I thought I need to break the day up a little.
I plan to do a little painting for an hour, or two, after lunch. See if I can come up with some little designs maybe for future rock painting.
I will then sit on the floor near my window again, to feel more closer to nature inside, than I do already when on my settee. Maybe read a book, while doing this. I will do this for at least an hour, before I consider to put a dvd on.
I tried my baking I made yesterday and I enjoyed. But a little less jam is needed next time, should I ever make these again.

Sunday morning, I plan to make some shortbread biscuits, after I have had breakfast. Then transfer some music onto my mp3 and listen, to see how it sounds since I had my hearing aids turned up a little, earlier this year.
After lunch, maybe I can motivate myself and get that lop eared pom pom bunny completed. 🤔
I will have a dvd on, (or two) starting late afternoon, to early evening.

What’s your weekend plans?
